Never Move In With Family | Episode 1

Picking up our lives and moving from Florida to Connecticut was no easy task. It probably would been easier if we hadn’t waited until the last week to pack everything up, get a Uhaul, and load it. Thankfully we had the help of a couple friends and the dogs didn’t scream every time we opened the door to take a box out.

We had to break the drive up into two days. Originally our plan was to drive straight through because we didn’t think we could find a hotel that would allow three dogs. We were so grateful some of our family came through and found a place we could stay that was halfway into our drive. All we had to worry about was finding rest stops every couple hours since our little nugget enjoys kicking my bladder any chance he can get, especially on a car ride.

In total, the trip took us around 25 hours. He did all the driving since it was a 26-foot truck and the biggest vehicle I’d ever driven was a GMC pickup truck. It wasn’t a particularly eventful drive and we lucked out that not too many people were on the road because of covid and all. I can’t say I would make that trip again though. I think if we ever have to move to a different state we will hire movers. It was far too much hassle to do it ourselves.

Now on to the fun part – actually getting to our new home!

Note: We went into this move knowing that his mother would be living with us for up to 6 months because we had moved up our timeline for this move by almost an entire year.

Everyone knew that we were coming up. We’d been making plans for over a month. They had all been informed that we were moving our entire lives up here for the foreseeable future. So, it wasn’t a surprise when we pulled up in the driveway and they were waiting for us with much enthusiasm.

Hugs and kisses and tears of joy later, we were ready to see our new house and plan out where we were going to put everything.

1 week of packing. 1 26-foot Uhaul. 25 hours driving.

There was not a single inch of space where we could put our stuff.

His mother had moved in everything she owned, despite knowing we were coming to live here and take over the house. There was not even an iota of wiggle room for us, other than putting our bed, dresser, and clothes in the upstairs bedroom.

The garage, the basement, and the second floor were packed. Even the room that was supposed to be Nugget’s is packed. Our hearts deflated and the anger set in. We had 2 days to unload the Uhaul and take it back yet there we were trying to figure out where our stuff was possibly supposed to go.

I don’t think we’d ever wanted to turn around and go back to Florida so much in our lives.

We had to move everything in the garage to one side the best we could and start unloading so that we could get to our bed so we could at least set that up to sleep that night. We’d made the deal that we would worry about the rest in the morning.

That was not the way we wanted to start out our new lives but that’s not the end of the adventure! There are so many parts to this that I just had to break it up so stay tuned for the continued saga of our move.

Wishing you the best!
